This thirsty boy kept looking and pointing at our water bottles on the table, and begging me to give him water. Unfortunately, I can’t give him any. And that’s why he gave that sad looking face. He is not the only person who begged us for drinking water. Children on the streets also waited outside the restaurant we went to, and begged us for water when we came out.
It’s really depressing to see their sad and disappointed faces when we shook our heads or ignored them and continued walking. And come to think of it, I’m sure many of us are guilty of wasting water, back in Singapore. In Cambodia, it’s really hard to find just one water bottle with drinking water left inside. But in Singapore, it’s so common and it can even be found in the rubbish bins. Many of us take drinking water for granted. And I’m guilty for that.
After the trip to Cambodia, I think we’re really fortunate to be in Singapore, a place where we can drink water from any water taps. But we must remember that there are many people in the other parts of the world who are not as lucky as us. Thus, we must appreciate what we have, and not taking things for granted. We don’t have to stop ourselves from drinking water to empathise with them. But we can do our part just by not wasting water, and also reminding others not to.
