The scene depicted from the photograph above speaks volume about the lack of facilities in Cambodia. Many students to a teacher is unthinkable to most teachers and parents included, in Singapore. However, this is ubiquitous in Cambodia where the lack of facilities hinders the Cambodian education system. It was definately an enjoyable yet gruelling experience guiding them throughout the lessons with an average of 70 students per class. Amazing isn't? With the help of my OCIP mates, the task of teaching the students was made much simpler. One thing that captivated my heart was the enthusiasm shown by the students in learning. It never crossed my mind to witness such enthusiastic, little kids paying attention to your commands, especially while teaching. The satisfaction and happiness I attained from getting their attention was definately pleasing.
This brings about the notion that of the attitude of some fortunate students in Singapore, including me perhaps, for taking things for granted. Indeed, our education is paid for by our parents and subsidised for some. Yet, some of us just avoid the idea of putting in effort in their studies without careful consideration of how much time and effort our parents have slogged just to raise their child with quality education. My advice: treasure what you have, including your education. Just spare a thought for what your parents are doing for you. Without them, you wouldn't be where you're standing today. Some of the Cambodian student are orphans themselves and my heart truly goes out to them. I'm fortunate and happy to be where I'm today! In all, MissionOPIC has been a fruitful one for me and certainly and eye-opener. And, the journey doesn't end there.......
